my friends who ride with me who do not ride Teneres hate the engine braking of the Tenere . makes them have to pay attention when behind me . I keep hearing "is your brake light broken " . in the mountains engine braking was a big help ,roll on roll off the throttle with little brake input .
but, always a but , at times when I have to let go of the throttle and it slides me up on the seat , that gets a bit annoying . my Beta 2 stroke has almost no compression braking , the Tenere almost doesn't need its brakes , so somewhere in between would be nice .
question , did the re-flash change fuel milage for better or worse ?

<<snip>> question , did the re-flash change fuel milage for better or worse ?
No change in mileage for either my previous '12 (Anthony) or the current '18 (2WDW). With the '18, I'm consistently getting 48-50.

Funny you mention compression braking and brake use. I'm a light brake user and prefer to set up corners under compression braking. If I'm riding with anyone other than my core group of friends, I make sure and let everyone know that I don't use a lot of brakes. Both my Tenere and FJR (Ivan) are flashed and I find the post-flash compression braking performance to be excellent all around.

Hope this helps. You won't be disappointed with a Tenere flash!

Whether the engine slows you down, or the brakes do. . . . your body weight is still going to transfer forward. I hardly ever ride with anybody. I never thought about no brake light warning somebody behind. :D

it bothers some of the guys a lot ..... my solution to them is get in front or quit following so close.
the speed change is pretty intense and if your looking at rabbits your going to have a oh crap moment.
when I'm in my small group ride I try to keep a 50 to 100 yds following distance . keeps us from bumping into each other and allows faster traffic to pass .

Well, I got my ECU re-flash yesterday by Nate/2WheelDynoWorks in Kirkland, WA. I arrived at the shop as they opened and Nate took me right in and had my ecu reflashed in under an hour! Gotta hand it to you all for ALL the good information available on this site! The great thing about ECU re-flash is that I can always go back to OEM setup if needed & Nate/2WheelDynoWorks stated, any future need for ECU re-flash is 'free' except IF your bike is being 'dyno tuned'. I just ordered an Arrowhead mid-pipes, so when I decide to install them, I will mail my ecu to Nate for proper re-flashing.

As for the ride quality, the first thing I noticed was the 'on/off throttle jerkiness' ... I wouldn't say it's entirely gone, but it's very manageble now. The engine braking has been reduced quite a bit & I'm finding myself using the brakes more to slow my butt down. I never realized how much engine braking I was using! The cooling 'fan' kicks in earlier now at around 197~201F instead of 221F which I find it bit annoyting, but I'd rather have engine cooling sooner than later. Lastly, the bike seems to pull 'progressively' in 1st 3 gears now without hesitation, I used to just quickly shift thru at least the 1st 2 gears, but now, I can use it little longer.

For what 2WheelDynoWorks charges for 'basic OEM setup', the 'pro's' definitely out ways the 'con's' ... IF there is any! Plus, any 'changes' you make to your that requires 'ecu reflash' he offers to do it for free. I don't think you can ask for anything better! My next 2 upgades will be to replace my mid-pipe with Arrowheaders and creating the 'ABS Off Switch' I saw on this site.

Again, thank you ALL for your in-puts!

Well, I've been riding around after the ECU reflash for the past month and half & I gotta say, it feels great! The 'jerkiness' is still there, but it's not as bad as it was before & it feels free-er reving in 1st 3 gears. Less engine braking caught me bit off guard, but I love it now! All the improvement is with the stock setup, so I'm looking forward to see how it will run after the mid-pipe change. I've purchased the Arrow mid-pipe + K&N air filter already which I plan to install over the winter and mail the ECU to 2WDW for another reflash to compensate for the changes. I'm still debating whether to stay with the OEM can or swap it with something else ... I wasn't very happy with my experience with a Delkvic can.

to me if you going to change out air filter and mid pipe (not sure why you would not change stock exhaust can ) and not change out the stock exhaust can , your just wasting time and money . I know the re-flash is free , but postage and time to do it . I'm planning on having them do my re-flash soon , but my exhaust will remain stock .

If I recall my conversation with 2 Wheel DynoWorks correctly, changing up the air filter and muffler doesn't bring drastic change (in addition to what the amazing flash does). Changing the pipes and leaving the stock muffler, can however, liven things up.

The impression I got was that if you want hp gains and even more "energy" than what their flash alone gives, consider pipe mods. Again, that's to my best recollection.

All that stated, I'm good with the stock exhaust and the flash. For me, it's bonkers enough man! If I get any more "energy" than what I've got in the flash, I'm pretty confident I'll start pushing the ST way outside its performance envelope! Ha ha! Those days, I just need to ride my little street fighter ;-)

I just want my bike to be better
I hear ya. If it's about the fueling, then I think the flash will deliver! As I mentioned earlier, after months after seat time, a few tours and lots of miles, I was considering selling mine :-/ Can't fully describe it but it just felt choppy and corked up :-I More so than any other big bore ADV I've ridden. The flash confirmed my suspicions and I've since recommitted myself to a long term relationship with the ST :-D I'd book that flash Madhatter. The ecu can always be restored to stock and IF you do sell it, $239 is not the worst wallet denting investment most ADVers/tourers will make X-D Now, if it cost a grand or so, and you were considering selling it, that'd be a different story. Just my humble 2 cents sir.

to trade my bike would be a big hit in the wallet as my 2019 is paid for .... and I may have not said this but once I'm at speed (other than massive engine braking ) I rather enjoy this bike . and about engine braking , I am used to it and find it useful at times and with cruise control which I can set and then not feel the engine braking if I let go of the throttle to adjust myself.but a little less engine braking might make things more enjoyable . choppy and corked up ,and if im in sport mode its even worse.
so my plan is to do the re-flash ,soon .
