Hi all, I suspect this may be already out there but I could not find it so here goes.

Last week the oil seal on the shaft side of the final drive starting leaking quite badly. On removing the pumpkin I was dismayed to find the lower half of the inside of the shaft housing full of grit and mud, the reason I suspect for the leaking seal. In Perth our summers are to hot for adv riding in the bush which means our riding season is in Winter which is our wet season and means I spend a lot of time in conditions like this (see images). I suspect the vent at the bottom of the housing is the culprit.

So this is what I’m going to try as a solution. I have created an extended “snorkel” by inserting a length of 3mm clear vinyl tubing which fits through the vent hole very snuggly. I then drilled a hole in the tube just above the surface of the housing to allow any fluid that may still get in to be able to drain and also for any tell-tail oil. The tube is then run along the outside of the housing and up into the frame. This will prevent any mud and water from getting into the housing whilst still allowing the housing to vent.

That’s a great mod! You may want to seal the tube inside of the pumpkin to make sure it doesn’t slide out with vibration etc.

A lot of people that drive their Jeeps in the same conditions, do the same kind of mod. Except the pumpkin vent it on the top. But, the purpose is the same.

so i take it, the pipe inside the housing has a hole in it at the bottom so anything in the housing, will still get in the clear pipe and drop down inthe pipe and you,ll see it in the pipe , but if there is anything draining into the pipe from the housing you,ll need to pull the pipe out of the housing to get it out of the pipe

The swing arm has two fairly large rubber plugs that were something of an afterthought, they fit very poorly and are known to vanish. The swing arm will fill and drain repeatedly if either one of these plugs is gone.

HI Rob, the idea is that once there is any tell-tail, I open it up and clean it out. I’ll use compressed air to blow our any liquid in the tube. My thought it that it’s primary purpose is to stop material and liquid ingressing into the housing and to alert me if any has.
