I bought my 2014 S10 last year , the previous owner had just mounted new Shinko E705 tires . I personally would never buy this brand, but they were new so I20200528_183656.jpg thought i would try them out.
last weekend i got caught in a downpour, when I turned into a gas station the S10 slid out from under me , luckily the only thing that was hurt was my pride.
that's when I found out these tires are very slick in the rain.
I bought some new Conti Trail Attack 3 tires , after changing the tires I gave the old ones a close inspection and found small cracks around one side of the tire as shown in the picture.
I would like to warn all riders NOT to use this tire.

Glad you are alright.

What's the year of manufacture for the tire? (4 digit code)

I've never run shinkos in the superT but am a great fan of them on the klr (the 244 model).

I'm not defending or knocking shinko, but I don't think that crack is any kind of a manufacturing problem. Something happened to the tire.

I have Shinko 705 on my bike and they are fine in the rain. They are not Intermediate Greens from Pirelli but they do ok. Of course, riding in the rain requires a different riding style. But you already know that.

I ran a couple sets of shinkos. I had some sort of issues with both front tires coming out of balance after runnung a couple of 80 mph days on them. Not sure what changed but a rebalance and they were ok. The front cupped very bad too. When they got some ware on them they did lack corner grip from the raised edges on the tread. I never saw any cracking like that though! That is bad. I wouldnd have problems using another set i just would not run them as long as i did the other two sets.

dont throw the baby out with the bath water. You may have a bad set of tires. Doesn't mean Shinko is a shit company. Maybe it does. Who knows? My set has been really good. Every company will have some lemons every now and then. Hell, numerous tire manufacturers had a recall in 2018 and 2019. It happens.

What's the date code on those, I know I had heard some rumblings in the early years but hadn't heard of this in a while. I ran 4 sets of these and they did better in the rain than the Metzler tourances I took off. Of course that was on a Strom quite a bit lighter than the S10 might have made some difference but doubtful.

@Bayes totally agree that you tried it given the bad experience, will never use them again (or maybe that company)

For the rest of the folks, if you could let us know what the date code is, it'd be good to eliminate 'previous owner installed really old tire' as a possibility
(this is what it should look like)

That's a ton of cracking for that type of tire, and I wouldn't ride them either.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with the tire, and I can understand your "once bitten, twice shy" attitude towards them. Many people have had good experiences with the Shinkos, myself included but the good thing about having so many choices is that we can each make the one that works for us.

I hope the Continentals meet your expectations, heard that they are a good 90/10 tire.

I'm with jeckyll on this, mainly because there was a period multiple years ago that some of the 705s did suffer from cracking along the tread blocks. If I had to take a guess, I'd say this was maybe 10 years ago. I've ridden a lot of 705 tires in the past eight years or so, and I've never experienced this issue with the 705 tubeless radial, nor have I read any accounts in multiple other motorcycle forums that this is a current problem.

As for the "slick in the rain" warning, that hasn't been my experience at all. I've put almost 100,000 miles on two different bikes since 2012, and most of those miles were on Shinko 705's. There have been too many occasions to count where I've been riding on wet roads in downpours with no issues at all with the tire. You're certainly entitled to your own assessment of the tire, but I'm perfectly comfortable recommending the 705 as a very good, reasonably priced motorcycle tire.

If that happened to me, the cracking of the tires, I would be using a different tire brand next time. Steaks are too high. I have always had good luck with Dunlop. Others swear by Michelin. It’s like an oil thread it can get endless. In the end, we base these decisions from our experience. Clearly this was a bad experience.
