Hi guys,

going to buy a sena prism tube helmet camera, its a 5v camera. I asked their help desk to make the battery last longer in the camera can i mount camera to fairing on the bike instead of helmet and use a power cable from camera to my 12v aux socket.
they came back with no the 12v socket would damage the 5v camera OK , but then after the chat desk went off ithought i asked it wronh the standard auxillary socket is ok i think as its for sat nav camera etc as it runs a 3v fuse.

So am i correct the 5v sena camera with the righ lead into the back of camera and into the auxillary socket would be ok, and the camera would be charging while riding so the 2hr battery life would be longer i hope anyway.

the chat line did say that i could have the camera mounted on the bike and have it connected to a iphone powe bank in a tank bag etc and the iphone power bank would keep the battery charged and used longer, but i have no idea what a iphone 5v power bank is and where to get one on line.

any in put would be great lads

thanks

rob

The auxiliary socket is 12 volts with a 3 amp fuse. The Sena camera charges it's battery through a usb cable so you can plug a usb adapter into the auxiliary socket and then plug the camera in with it's charging cable. I don't know if you can use the camera while it is plugged in and charging. The reviews I've seen on the Sena camera aren't very good.

bit confused then as sena said a 12v socket would damage the 5v camera, i thought because it had a 3 amp fuse the camera would be ok plugged into that socket, she said i would be better plugging the camera into a fully charged 5v iphone power bank to get the camera battery to last longer than 2 hrs while riding,
but not sure where the best ones of them are to be honest

You can’t put more than 5v to the camera. You would have to use a step down accessory adapter from 12 to 5v with proper amperage output if you can find one.

As everybody has told you, you can not plug the camera straight into 12V. But then, with the Sea cable you won't be able to, either. The cable will only fit a 5V USB outlet, just like for your phone.

Put one of these in the 12V outlet and you will be fine. Just take it out if it's raining:

btw - Have the power inlet to the camera plugged when it rains. There is a rubber plug with the camera.

Or it is easy to replace the cig outlet with one of these:

It's hard on lithium batteries and shortens their life to always keep them on a charger.

USB ports put out 5V, so if you put a USB adapter plug (phone charger type) into the 12V socket it has a built in voltage reducer to put out 5V.

Sounds like Sena misunderstood your questions and thought you were asking them if you could input 12V directly into the camera, which of course would damage it. I've powered all kinds of things off 12v outlets in my cars and bikes using USB (5V) adapters of various flavors...

I run a Sena 10c pro and it can be charged while you're recording. I use a cheapo $11 walmart power bank in my jacket pocket and run a short 6" cable to the camera. It will record all day long, no problem.

tabasco,

got a link please

I believe it’s in “what did you do to your bike today”

I even searched for it. Can’t find it. The search will find everything other than what I’m looking for.

I think it's this one...

I have a question about the actual socket <> device cable.
With the position of the OE socket (upgraded or original) is there a risk of water ingress when a cable is in use?
Anyone know if there is a gaiter that could be added to your preferred cable that would cover over the USB socket when in use. The dust cap is fine when not in use obviously.

I have not found the right keywords in good ol' google, and if someone already has something please share :)

The socket itself has a drain hole and is fused, so the risk is not between that and whatever you plug into it.

USB connectors are notoriously not waterproof and will short if a drop of water gets to them. Between the device and cable at the socket, you could easily make a gator with a bit of Iran wrap and a rubber band.

The problem is going to be where the cable plugs into your phone/GPS/etc.
