Notchy upshifts 2-3, 3-4 and new boots

Recently bought a pair of Forma ADV Tourer boots and my up shifts from 2-3 and 3-4 have been a bit problematic either with a notchy feel and a clunk (2-3 gear) or no upshift at all unless I really bang it up. Does not happen all the time.
Shifter pivot was cleaned and greased last season and oil and filter change (Motul 10-40W full synth.) are about 1,500 miles in.
Bike has about 9,900 miles on the clock.
Can it be I just haven’t adjusted to the new boots?
I plan on taking a quick scoot tomorrow with different footwear to see if it happens still.
Thoughts?

If it was fine before the new boots, then likely the boots.

I greased the gear shift pivot last season, that’s about 12k miles ago. Was getting difficult to change gear again so cleaned and greased a few days back, loads better again.

Different boots do effect my shifting but no where near as much as you have described. Yes taking a test ride with your old boots would be a good idea. If the shifting issue persists with the old boots I would definitely try re lubing all the shift lever joints. Many folks report different shifting with different oils, I have noticed slight differences but nothing I would call big.

I have found when changing boots it takes me a little time to adjust to the different toe box. I wasn't getting my toe under the shift pedal as completely before moving up, causing a rough shift. In one case, my foot sat on the peg a bit different and I really had to watch that I wasn't accidentally putting pressure on the shift lever and brake pedal when just riding along. Caused some no shifts when I wanted to down shift because I had already depressed the lever. Once I adjusted to a new foot position, no issue. Ditto on getting used to moving my foot a bit differently to get fully under the shift lever before putting up pressure on it.

Hope that's all it is.

I bought the same boots a few months ago and noticed the exact same thing, especially when shifting quickly. It happens less now that I am used to it, but occasionally I'll still miss a shift. I started to consciously think about my shifts and doing it deliberately, and it seemed to improve.

When I swap to my SG10 moto boots it's pretty rough trying to shift this beast. It's definitely the boots. As Jeff said you might want to adjust the shifter. I just adapt to it as I don't wear my moto boots that often on this bike.

Is this the same oil you’ve always ran in this bike?
Transmission in my 17 doesn’t seem to like HRC 20-50 non syn. Nothcy shifting in those gears. Oil change coming up, going back to semi syn yamalube.
I picked up this new to me '13 S10 last June, the P/O used Motul 4T 10W-40 full Synth so I went forward using the same. When I did an oil/oil filter and final drive oil change last Summer the shifting was snickity-snick (excellent).

I bought the same boots, had the same problem! Had to adjust the shift lever up several times to have proper shiting.
I assume you both are referring to the Forma ADV Tourers that I bought not ballistexchris's SG10s.
The one thing about the Forma ADVs is that they have a real deep instep between the heel and the outersole so that when you place the instep right over the OEM pegs the shifter actually lines up with the bridge of the foot not the actual toe.

Tomorrow night I will throw on a regular pair of boots and take my S10 out for a scoot so I can rake up and down through the gears and
see what happens.
Thanks for everyone's input.
Regards,
MFP

I am now convinced my shifting issues were indeed caused by my new Forma ADV Tourer boots. Looks like I need to get used to them and the lack of “gearshift lever feel” on the toe box.
Wore a pair of slimmer type boots yesterday and shifting was the way it should be.

Wish I was that fortunate
FWIW, I highly recommend that you give Motul 4T 7100 10W-40 full synth a try. It is a bit pricey but it holds up well especially in the brutal stop-n-go traffic (which degrades oil quickly) I am exposed to on a regular basis. This oil meets or exceeds all the necessary motorcycle ratings/specs and benefits wet clutches. I have also found that this oil lessens the farm machinery feel of the S10’s transmission.
This oil also seems to help my engine temps run “cooler” especially when the oil is relatively fresh.
Lastly, I really like the crimson color of the oil.

I also just bought new Daytona Travel GTX boots and had the same problem, sometimes the gears did not shift upwards. Turns out that the shifter did not return to end after previous shift as my new boot was higher than the old one and the toe below the shifter blocked it way. It takes some time to get used to it ...
