I say mix it up! I like either, plus some dirt if you can find it. You do need appropriate tires if you get off the pavement. I found OEM Battlewings pretty squirrely on gravel. (Not fun...)

I like dirt roads but this bike is too much for me "165 lbs, 5' 10", 31" inseam," on single track dirt. I was out a lone on a single track and had to turn around due to a tree across my path. Well that is something I will never forget. I didn't drop the bike but had to get off and run her up the bank, hit the brake, let her slide down and try again while standing on the left side of the bike. I made it but never again and yes I did try the center stand turn around thing. Mostly pavement now which this bike is good at.

My plan is to ride pavement but never had the good sense to turn around when the road changed to gravel/dirt. At least I look like I belong when I don’t turn my Tenere around! -JEP-

I didn't see "whatever surface gets me to where I want to go". That's why "I" went with the Tenere. I knew it could take whatever "I" threw at it; I'm sure the bike's capabilities exceed mine.

Just picked up a New 2016 60th anniversary yellow. I bought it for traveling solo and 2-up.

Ditto,
I went threw some seriously rough roads while trusting my GPS on my FJR. I still don't trust the GPS but I'm not worried about what terrain I'll be up against.

Gravel and forest service roads. Two track, if I can avoid deep puddles and mud I will, if I cant i get off an walk it, if I think I can continue I will. But usually I wont if there is any question about getting stuck or if I'm by myself. I'm new to this, sport bikes all my life, but what I have learned is slow it down to a comfortable pace, its supposed to be fun. I know I've been teased if you haven't crashed your not going fast enough. I don't agree, maybe on small dirt bikes, but not on the big ADV bikes., it sucks so much energy out of you if you have to pick these bikes up, and usually your not close to home. what I'm struggling with is finding grip, I don't know yet how far to trust the front, but I think that just takes time and experience. I'm my sport bike days I took some track training and it taught me a lot about grip, This is what id like to do it take a couple ADV courses, not dirt bike courses, that's a different animal, IMO.

Seems like a lot of us ride mostly pavement... Perhaps Yamaha should offer a version of the S10 with street tires and lowered a bit? Would make a great lighter weight alternative to the FJR...
A shafted FJ09 would be real tempting but I like the ADV stance.
90/10 is my intention and I’d rather put knobbies on a 250 than this beast but yeah it could be lower.
