So someone pried open my left pannier. I guess thinking there was something worth stealing. But it was completely empty… I don't know why they didn't do the right side… maybe someone came up on them...
In the process they broke the stock plastic hook. Does anyone know if they sell just that part? The plastic hook that keeps the lid down?

I have the OEM Yamaha Panniers… Hoping I don't have to buy a WHOLE pannier!!!!!

I am checking to see if we have the part you need. Archer has the the parts.

Had a crashed side case and disassembled it for spare parts. Not sure if the latch was saved.

bump .. Im cruising through all the threads has anyone found a solution for this " the plastic hook " that holds the lid down , can't find the actual part anywhere . Maybe a 3D printer to make/ copy one , or has someone come up with a better solution ?

A member has asked if i can make these out of metal.
I may have a solution if i had one to get the measurement for a program and make them out of metal.
Would also need a good amount of members to cut the cost down, quantity makes for my machinist time worth doing on his precision cutting equipment.
I haven't seen this latch hook personally to know if it's flat or has a bend in it.
The simpler the better at keeping down the cost, flat is easy one step.
This guy knows his stuff, does precision one off parts for LANL in Los Alamos, NM.
HE can do one off but it would not be worth the price.

This topic had me look at my stock latches... and now i'm wondering if I should not just ditch them, setup something on the inside for the bracket release and install some traditional latches with locks on a separate key like most other panniers. Might be worth it in the long run.

Something like this.

55$ US + a new set of locks and done, for the side cases anyway, would need a 3rd one for the top case.

The trick is to contact a ebay seller that has other parts and ask if he has a damaged pannier that he could sell you the hook from. They don't normally come off, nor would the seller take one off a good pannier. IOW, You're not going to see just the pannier hook/latch on ebay.

Maybe machine one (or one of each, if they're different left vs. right), and use those to make molds to cast replacements.

I was interested in a used set here with broken latches - my thought was to 3-D print them.

From what I can see without disassembling anything, all 3 j hooks are the same and they appear to be flat 4.5 mm thick.
When I get to Arizona in November I can confirm this, and send you one if nobody else does before then. Shipping from/to Canada is a PIA.
I'm also thinking it may be best to stay with plastic, if someone is determined to break into the pannier I'd rather have to replace just the j hook than the entire lid or box because the metal hook wouldn't give up.

However you want to do this, plastic i can see your point but when was the last time anyone broke into your bags or attempted?
I have been all over and my bags have no locks just open them up, never had an issue.
If you don't want these to keep failing or wear out metal is the way to go.
But on the other hand what is this J hook rubbing against when its being put into position.
If that's plastic the metal could wear at it as well, so now we have two parts maybe to consider.

The plastic j hook grabs a metal dowel pin that is pressed into plastic ribs in the lid. So if the hook didn't break then the pin would get ripped out of the ribs and you'd need a new lid.
I've actually bypassed the locks on my panniers, a thin wire hanging out the side of the boxes pulls on the j hook so I can get in without the key, I can simply unhook the wire and the pannier locks work normally.
No one has ever tampered with my bike but the OP and others have had break ins so it does happen.

If we can get a sample to Ramseybella, he probably will have a solution for us. A metal replacement would be a welcome treat as yamaha has decided to not make a replacement.

Can someone post a pic of the piece? I could mill one out of some Delrin sheet stock that I have or mill one out of aluminum. Should be easy enough to do. I don;t have those panniers on my bike , so have no idea what the part looks like.

I Could give making one a go, but I'd need one to take measurements from (a broken one like the one pictured would be fine). Also have to decide what material to make it from - aluminum might be too strong - causing connecting parts to fail, Delrin or HDPE might be better.
