Super Tenere possibly discontinued in 2014
« on: July 09, 2013, 06:00:53 pm »
Really? ??? This has been discussed in some other threads but newsworthy of its own.  Scroll down to the "Possibly Discontinued" portion of the page in this link:
http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcycles/2014models/2014-Yamaha.htm
Any one have any more info. or thoughts? I know my dealer thinks it is too tall for most and too expensive for mass appeal (vs. "...sold a dozen Bolts already ...").

Sentiments can go different ways:

1) I got mine so who cares? ::008::
2) I want Yamaha to stick with this and refine it to perfection (as if it isn't already?). :'(
3) Shut-up and ride. What will be will be.

Cheers,

SS

Won't be surprised if it comes to pass.

People want these bikes, but at a sub-$9,000 price - ain't going to happen.

And there just aren't that many on the roads, relative to all bikes.

I'll be disappointed, but grateful to have mine.  It could actually keep resale values high, too, if Yamaha discontinues it in  the US.

Time will tell all...

revised for 2015.  one year to clear out all remaining stock so as to not devalue it beyond any reasonable amount.  Changes will be significant.

I dont think they will discontinue, but the are not selling that many, so  don't expect  many, if any, upgrades in the following years. Just look at their other product lines, i.e. quads, sleds and outboard . No upgrades in the last few years, other than paint jobs or rims. Their new Rhino side x side only got an extra seat, and all the other brands are launching new, bigger and better motors, suspension etc every year.
It seems to me the adventure riding/ dual sport is no t very well represented in north america. Yamaha seems to be pretty loyal to their customers so they will not screw us over just yet.
In my recent trip of 10000km i did not see one super ten, and only 3 bmw gs1200. I must have seen at least over a 100 cruisers and HD on the road. Not very good numbers. Unless you are a yamaha junkie like me, you will buy a bmw

A FZ9 motor based bike would be a cool adventure bike but the current trend is 1200 and lots of hp so I don't think it will happen.  They should keep the current bike and shave off 30 lbs and gain 20 hp!

The R&D costs are now covered, unless repalcing it I cannot see why they would drop it, the factory gate costs are relatively small on motorcycles, it is re-couping R&D on small (compared to car) production runs that induce high costs.

They could also afford to reduce the price if not altering it much (or doing other incentives such as free accessories / low rate finance) which would what I would do, especially in the UK where the latest BMW and KTM are the same money and much "higher spec"

I dunno if a re-work would be enough for the fickle buying public, in the UK folk do not consider the cost of sky-hook suspension replacement as they will flog the bike before the warranty is up, the second owner will buy from a dealer with a bit of warranty that will make him feel OK about it, the Yamaha will be most appreciated as a used bike a few years down the line when the KTTM / BMW / MTS are all viewed as a financial liability.

Yamaha I think need to keep quality / reliability up and the cost down, if they could do a few simple improvements and market it as a good value and indestructible bike priced at the lower end due to not having electronic suspension etc I think they would have a good niche to themselves and leave the others to keep having to carry out a complete re-design every 18 months to keep up with each other.

This is like Déjà vu all over again.  Year after year of owing a DL1000 the rumors would flare up every single year that the bike would be discontinued.  Still hasn't happened.  Please forgive me if I'm a little skeptical about the demise of the S10.  I'll believe it when Yamaha announces it.

Amen, Swede.

If you already own a Super Tenere and you like it, there's no problem if Yamaha does decide to drop it. If you really want a Super Tenere, but don't own one yet, there are plenty of dealers with ones in stock (both 2012 and 2013 models), along with plenty of great used ones, that anyone should be able to get one. If you own one and don't like it then none of the availability conjecture really matters.

Me, I'm like Dirt Dad...  Every year people worry over whether certain models will survive or not. Most of the time they do. Sometimes a year goes by where the model is absent, but it returns. Rarely are relatively new models, like the Super Tenere, dropped.

OTOH, sometimes they are dropped. Lots of examples of that. But even if they are something usually comes along, from somebody, that replaces it and is equally desirable. Life goes on, bikes come and go, and there are always used ones out there if one you love goes away.
