Strange humming/buzzing sound when brake is applied
« on: July 10, 2018, 02:22:48 pm »
Ok, I have something strange going on. I just noticed a slight humming/buzzing noise when the front brake is applied. It goes away after I decelerate under 25mph. This is my first bike with antilock or "unified braking. Anyone else notice this when braking? It happens during normal braking. I'm assuming it must be the servo motor that activates the unified braking system.

Not sure if it's been doing it since new. I just noticed it at around 500 miles. A quick search just turns up only a short thread on it:

I'll hit up the tech when I bring it in for 1st service. Yea' I know. I can service it myself but I get a discount for 1st service. And the guys at the shop are real techs that actually know what the hell their doing.

I noticed the same thing on my bike. I guessed it was because the disc has scalloped edges. The brakes work great and the pads are in good order so I didn't (and still don't) worry about it.

I think all the bikes I've had with perforated disks have made a slight whirring noise under braking. Usually wear ear plugs though so haven't really noticed on my Tenere.

Ĺh yes, mine also does this, and also on my old Trans Alp.
So I'm also pretty sure it is because the disks is perforatet, likw WJBertrand writes.
Not because of the wave disks, my Trans Ald did not have wave disks, but because of the perforation.

Lot of bike to stop, 90% are the front breaks doing it.
It's a normal sound on most modern bikes, my Triumph 1050 Tiger did the same thing, but i always use the HH sintered brake pads that amplifies the noise even more.
Sounds like a jet getting ready to land.. ;)

When you apply front brake only the computer controls application of the rear brake.  That sound is associated with the linked braking.

It's just the drilled rotor, nothing to do with linked braking. My mountain bike makes the same sound  when handfuls of brake is needed.
As I get older, I am no longer surprised at what I know, I'm surprised at how much I don't know.

Disc brake bobbins can make noise. Should be checked & cleaned occasionally.

The act of riding is a form of meditation, because the concentration that's required to safely ride a motorcycle tends to focus the mind in a way that eliminates other mental distractions that might interfere with the mission.

Thanks Kev!! That’s a good little maintenance item I can do at normal service.
