The easiest way to sort this out for a pillion as long as its a regular thing if its your partner is to get them a proper full length back protector which they should have anyway. The ones that come fitted in jackets are useless. My GF did thousands of miles on mine and never ever felt a thing. If you need more room thats another matter.

My wife has done 20+ k miles leaning on the top box with no back rest. But, she has a spine pad in her Jacket. If your passenger doesn't have a jacket with protection, spend the back pad money on a nice jacket for her. Think smarter, not harder.
