What about breakdown cover any thoughts?
Have not been away in Europe since 1997 so any big changes?

Thanks

Hi denis,
you need to know that having speed camera positions in your GPS can cost you big fines by reckognising by the police in France and Switserland.
Fines from 1.830 to several thousand euro!
Have you ever thought of French Alps? Rougher than the Swiss and Austrian, higher passes and nearer to GB than the Pyrenees.
Route des hautes Alps you can find on internet.
I'm traveling through Swiss and French Alps and then Pyrenees in May-June.

If your trip carrys through to July you need to carry a breathaliser!! (new legislation, and will probably only be used against foreigners, France is like that , only foreigners are used to make the speeding fine quotas etc!).

Use the regular roads as the Autoroutes are fast but expensive and you don't really see France.

France is a great country to tour through, Formula 1 Hotels are good (cheap and cheerful) if you are not camping.

All of France has its great rides and areas, but the Alps is definately my favourite.

The fine is only 11 Euros and you have to carry two breathalysers at a cost of around 6 Euros so that should you be stopped and have to use one of the breathalysers you can still carry on your journey. I think I'd rather take the risk of a fine, thanks. Word is that the French police won't actually be imposing any fines until 2013 to allow for a breaking in period for the new law.

If you want fun, definitely head for the Alps. Briancon is a very good place to base yourself, and a nice town (in the old walled bit at least). You really are in a bikers playground around there - highly recommended.

I'm doing aan trip through the Alps this summer. This is a part of France you can't miss imho.

My route here. Takes 3-4 days without the 2 unpaved parts at Bardonecchia
