Ain't done crap to it.
« on: November 11, 2017, 07:28:30 am »
How many you have neglected your Tenere' without any problems (so far)?  Mine is coming up on 25K miles and my normal maintenance consists of changing the engine oil/filter once a year and checking tire pressure. I did change the rear diff oil once.  Other than gas, tires and battery I haven't done much to the pig.  I've never looked at the air filter, fuel filter or sparkplugs.  Valve adjustment?  Don't ask.
I commute, therefore I am!

I do all the regular maintenance. Oil changes and such. I really don't look deep in to things unless there really is a need. I did change the timing chain tensioner and clutch basket. I did the first valve check at 40+K. I had one valve less than .002 out. Probably didn't need to fool with it but I was in there so I made it right. Hope to never be in there again. I have a 89 FJ1200 with about 200,000 on it and the valves have been checked at times but really no changes needed. The good thing that bike was easy to do the valves on. Any way I hope this Tenere is as dependable as my old FJ. I do ride in terrible conditions so that affects some parts but the motors seem fine with it.

Failed fork seals 10k
Failed drive seal 25k
Rear brake pad 15k
Front brake pads 25k (had some left, tho)
Killed two radiator fans in left side drops in sand (one with Altrider bars installed, even)
Sitting in pcs right now with all 4 exhaust valves out of spec (.007-ish) 36k

Maintenance:
engine oil and filters
air filter around 25k
several final drive oil changes
coolant change
clutch hydraulic oil changed twice
front brake hydraulic oil changed twice, rear once
lubed shifter pivot and lever pivots many times
lubed drive shaft, splines, and most of suspension pivots
tires, tires, tires, tires, tires

Farkle work I "needed" to do:
longer hydraulic lines
aftermarket handlebars
aftermarket shock/ spring
aftermarket fork springs

I HATE working on the bike - and it seems like it always "needs" something.
I do ride it daily in all weather.

Currently 37,000 on my 13
Rear brake pads were shot and replaced at 25,000
Fork seals were also shot and replaced with All Balls fork seals and bushings at 25,000
Air filter was replaced at 25,000 but I suppose it could have gone longer

At 30,000 I paid a good mechanic friend to check the valves and they were fine, he also changed all the brake and clutch fluid and antifreeze.

I have done all the oil changes reasonably close to the recommended intervals.
About 10,000 miles ago I switched to LED headlights and wow that was a major improvement.
At the first tire change I switched to 45 degree metal valve stems and that was also a major improvement.
My Tenere came with the tallest Yamaha screen, a couple months ago I switched to the tallest and widest windshield VStream makes and wow I should have made the switch a long time ago !
I’ve also done the seat leveling mod by switching the rubber bumpers that everyone talks about and it’s a nice improvement.
There’s plenty of very helpful information to learn about the Tenere by simply taking the time to read this board !

Other than the one time fork seals failure So far my Tenere seems pretty much bulletproof .  I just wish it had cruise control and self canceling turn signals.

pushing 26k on my '12, I change my oil on time , I service the rearend on time , I just changed the air filter at 25k ( had about a hundred acorns stashed under the air filter, seems a pack rat of some kind thought it would make a nice apartment..... ) have changed the brake and clutch fluids about a year ago.... and I ride my bike like I'm making the payments on it.... cause I am..... I even washed it once ..... probably in January I will do valve check , new spark plugs , and cam chain thing, this next summer will have the front forks redone . nothing crazy, just normal care.... wish I had a garage ....

I bought my 2014 used at 9248 miles Oct 2016. It now has 58,000 miles. I change the rear drive oil every 16K and have moved the engine oil intervals to between 8-10,000 miles after some oil samples to Blackstone labs. I've cleaned the K&N air filter a couple times. No valve checks yet. Runs great with great gas mileage. Will probably do a valve check in a couple months and put iridium plugs in. I've ridden to 49 states this year, it's just gas n go!!

I don't have the miles y'all have....yet.... but I expect to.  I've never had any problems with any of my past Yamahas.  I've always made sure the oil gets changed; water cooling did add an extra maintenance step.  Besides, after LongHaulPaul's torture test of his Tenere, it's what I would expect.  And, from what I have read, he only performed the minimal maintenance.  So, I'm thinking that if I stay anywhere close to the manual's schedule, I'll never have a problem.  ::001::

Just over 27,000 now on my 14. Mileage way down this year as little time afforded for joy riding.  ::010:: Just changed the air filter and it definitely needed it(little gravel use for mine). Replaced brake/clutch fluid earlier this year. Oil every 4000mi and rear diff every other oil change. Will wait for the depths of winter to tackle valves.........or maybe not. I've done multiple V-Strom 650 checks but somehow can't get motivated to do this one. New battery waiting to be put in as well but she still fires up just fine.

If you've done the Strom you can do this bike. It's only one head.
