Have you done a title search on your used (New) Tenere?
« on: April 13, 2018, 12:20:34 pm »
Just wondering if you have done a search for history on your bike? if so were you surprised at anything you found?

I find it interesting to know the life prior to my buying there bike.
Let us know?

So where did you find history on your Tenere ?  Mine is a 2013 and the dealer I bought it from used claimed they had done all the maintenance and installs but they refused to let me see any of the information.   After I bought it the headlights quit working and I found out on this board that there was a headlight wiring recall so took it to my local dealer to get that replaced, the dealer that I bought it from claimed to be unaware of any wiring recall, they also seriously messed up the rear spokes , I would be very reluctant to take any bike to them for repairs.

Cycledude, I was just seeing if there was a preferred way or place to search.

My Google Fu is not strong but i am thinking of going to my state link posted and see if this works. The link is a pdf download that has links to all the states MVR reports. it is from the American association of motor vehicle administrators.
It did not trigger my av when I scanned it.

They also had a service recall on O-rings for the fuel pump and rear differential.
Do some research for the recalls.

This is one place to start:

https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/

This is the NHTSA website where you can look up safety recalls by VIN.  It's also supposed to tell you if a safety recall is incomplete for your vehicle.

This only covers actual NHTSA recalls though, as far as I can tell.  Manufacturers can still issue "safety bulletins" (much like BMW initially did for their fork separation issue, until it became an actual NHTSA recall), which aren't the same as a recall but still identify a particular problem with a model.

Doing a title search on your vehicle won't tell you much beyond who the previous owners were.  It might tell you if the vehicle was issued a salvage title in another state, and someone managed to scam their way into a clean title when the vehicle crossed state lines (like at an auction).

WOW thanks. I did look up my VIn and discovered the recall for the headlights has not been completed. Freedom Powersports in Hurst told me there were no recalls on the bike when I picked it up Thursday. Go figure.

You're welcome.

It's yet another example of a mantra that's served me well:  "Never completely trust a dealer".  I would be paying a visit back to Freedom Powersports to let them know that you didn't appreciate being lied to, and that maybe people who read Yelp reviews might find that interesting too.

Oh and get this. The salesman just called me and told me that i need to now go back up there and give him 2 forms of id. because he forgot....
I am sitting here looking at my paperwork and as far as im concerned it is a done deal. Unless it is a case where they are going to come get it I am not giving them anything else.

Depends on why the want the ID.

Unless you have the physical title in your hand, I'd want to know why they need the ID.  If it's something that's going to affect the transfer of the title, and they don't get the information they need from you, they're liable to just not complete the paperwork; after all, they sold it to you, it's not their problem any more if you don't get the title.

I take it your bike is a Generation 1 Tenere?
Did this bike come with any extended YES Warranty?
If any recall repairs had been done it will all be on record with Yamaha.

I had extended YES transferred by the previous owner at my local Yamaha dealer.
I didn't even need the paperwork when they replaced my main wiring harness in march.
They had all the info on hand of all the recall repairs, both O-Rings and headlight harness replacement.
Call the main hub in California and request any recall repair history, you're dealer will be able to pull this up as well.
 >:( If he says otherwise he's full of Sh*t and being lazy and non responsive!!
I reported a service manager from my local Yamaha dealer that gave me so much BS on why he couldn't then wouldn't work on my bike.
That the next time he just took off to the garage when he saw me walking towards the counter. Some are the best you can find others are just lazy.
You have to find the right button to push sad to say.

Because of the possibility of stolen credit cards and getting a nice reward for catching someone there are more than a few places around here these days asking to see identity with checks and credit-debit cards
