From my memory it was conventional....lefty loosey.  One of mine was ridiculously tight.
I think I used a socket type bit for it and a breaker bar on mine.

I tried several tools. What did the job was my Harbor Freight electric impact wrench. It left an impression on the flats of the receiving end of the weight.

Whoever built my bike make sure they would not loosen by accident!
