Maybe I missed it, but in the end, what was damaged and had to be changed? Glad to hear you have got it back together and fingers crossed that it starts and runs great, but curious what actually got damaged in the end and where did the piece of metal that you found come from?

She Lives !!!!!!

Came back to life today. She sounds and runs great. No more noise for a few seconds on cold start.....LOL

The Specs     Chain slap on cold start. Dealer mentioned when I was in for a valve adj. Both dealer and myself unaware of  "known," .... CCT "issues."
I had been hearing the noise on most every cold start since about 50-60k/mi. CCT failed  with 80176 mi.
Took into dealer and performed leak test w/ "leaks all over, exh & int". Dealer wants $800. to drop motor. Svs writer kept telling me to scrap the bike.
Striped off all the swag and called a couple recyclers, no one wanted it. With encouragement and advise here, I started work.
Chain skipped on Exhaust side cam. Ignored advise to just re-time and dropped motor. Inside was really good no problems (carbon).
Bent one oil ring trying to replace bottom gasket. Can not buy rings only, sold in set (piston / rings). Lapped and honed.
About 40 hours total with super detailed cleaning of everything. Had help re-assembling motor and getting motor back in w/ swing arm.
Total Parts, 2 pistons - Rings, CCT, Gaskets $890.   Labor help 6hr. $200  =  $1100.   Valves clearances were good so we lucked there.

Now I got to contribute as a site supporter again and THANK YOU everyone for advise.
I tried to find a recycler to take it.  Couldn't find then jumped on YAMAHA SUPER TENERE FORUM and was able to keep my bike  ::015:: ::018::

So did you not find out where that circular piece of metal came from?

I'm still wondering something, does anyone know of a reason not to use generation 2 pistons and rings in a generation 1 engine so you can buy just one set of rings at a time?

I don't know if there is a compelling reason either way, but it's been done at least a few times now.    I recall there is a compression change, but how or if that really impacts anything is unknown.  I do know that on a warranty claim, they will not put Gen II pistons in a Gen I motor unless you want to pay for it yourself.  And no changes to the rods are required if you do this.  The rings are unique to each Gen piston, so you either buy Gen I pistons that come with rings, or buy Gen II pistons and order Gen II rings to go with them.
