Lone Rider by Elspeth Beard
« on: January 12, 2018, 02:12:33 am »
Just wanted to share this in case any of you are feeling bored on these winter nights.
I'm currently reading 'Lone Rider' by Elspeth Beard. She is a british lady that rode around the world years ago. It's a good read.

She really is something.  Not only the first Englishwoman to do the RTW thing solo on a motorcycle, but she built her own aluminum panniers for the trip.  The photo of her sitting on her bike pretty much ticks off every box on the "adventure rider" checklist.  It's easily one of my favorite motorcycle-related pictures.

Yes. I agree. She did it properly and I have a lot of respect for her. Buy the book folks. It's a steal if you buy it on ebay. Years ago i read a RTW book by some bloke (cant even remember his name) and he was obviously pretty rich and stayed in 5 star pretty much throughout his journey. Fair enough, but there's no denying that Elspeth did it like a real adventure. Respect!!

It seems she aas pretty good with the spanners too. It also seems that there might be a movie based on her book at some point. What a woman!

I shudder to think about what kind of movie Hollywood or the British equivalent would spew out about her.  They'd either make her into some sort of superhero, or else turn it into some awful romantic flick about how she circled the globe to find true love.  Hollywood has no idea how to make a compelling movie about a woman doing something hardcore like an RTW trip without turning her into either Wonder Woman or else an annoying Julia Roberts clone.

Sadly you're probably correct. If it was a movie like 'On Any Sunday' or Mundo Enduro then it would be good.
I'm curious if all you USA folk are familiar with Austin Vince and Mundo Enduro. He and Elspeth are equally cool people!

I can't speak for all Americans, but I'm a huge fan of Austin Vince, and both Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa.  His documentaries weren't as polished as Long Way Round, but I felt they were way more enjoyable.  I've always loved that dry sardonic British humor, and Vince's documentaries had that in spades.  His wife Lois seems like she'd be a blast to ride with, too.

I also follow Ed March on YouTube.  He travels the world on a Honda C90, and his videos are terrific.

Looking at ebay now  (https://www.ebay.com/sch/Books/267/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=the+university+of+gravel&_sop=15) I scored in getting a lightly used one through a charity at $15 shipped.

This might be an obvious suggestion, but in case it isn't, I'd give Ted Simon's "Jupiter's Travels" a try.  He did his first RTW back in the early 70's, in a world way different that the one we're in now.  Simon is often named as the inspiration for a lot of motorcycle travelers.  He wrote a follow up book years later, "Dreaming of Jupiter" where he repeated the RTW trip in his 70's.  Both books are currently in print, and available on Amazon.
