Old but New...
« on: December 04, 2017, 06:37:18 pm »
Howdy from central Texas.  Great forum and have been enjoying reading all the S10 info.

My story.... 64 yrs ‘young’ and looking to replace my 2008 vstrom 650. Have been averaging two annual trips (usually west bound... CO, UT, AZ) with camping and forest road exploring. So riding 90/10 pavement / improved dirt. I’m very much a novice on the dirt! Getting a bit bored with the vstrom (has been a great bike) and would like both better power and off road capability.

Road my buddy’s AT (manual) last weekend and did a S10 (no ES) test drive today at the local dealership. Definitely leaning toward the S10 given most of my riding is the long haul on pavement to-from TX. Hoping I can get some feedback comparing the S10 dirt capabilities to the vstrom since that is my primary reference point.  Needing to convince myself that the heavier S10 will be better than the vstrom on dirt and that the additional weight won’t be an issue. The pavement riding is a no-brained... great power and torque, shaft drive, cruise control, wind management, etc. etc.

Cheers

Greetings from Malta and welcome to the forum. Unfortunately I cannot help you with the comparison, but I'm sure others will chime in.

::004:: from Switzerland. I hope it's a typo and the AF is actually an AT? If so, I did ride the AT, very nice, felt soooo much lighter than the S10 and if going off road more I would choose that, however, I also like cruise and shaft and tubeless tyres....... so went with another S10. If it helps, reach out to 'Greg the pole', he just sold his S10 to get a new AT in January, he may give you  some insight.
As I get older, I am no longer surprised at what I know, I'm surprised at how much I don't know.

Well put and we have lost a few owners to the newer lighter AT. I just see it as two flavors of really good ice cream and only you know which is right for you today.
Welcome back.

::004:: It almost sounds like you have made the decision.  Like Juan, I have very limited off-pavement experience.  But, I have been on gravel roads and "two-rut" roads with the OE Battlewings.  Not much drama, and if you fitted more off-road oriented tires it would be even easier I'm sure.  I prefer an ES model, but that's entirely dependent of your needs.
