Too bad Yamaha can't issue a service bulletin.

Woulda....shoulda....coulda......... :'(

I'm sure it dosen't have any bottom end damage. Guess I should do the clutch while it's apart.

If it was mine I would put it back in time and do a leak down test before ever pulling the head.

I never had my t. chain slip (manual cam chain adj. installed) ..only oil usage.
at your mileage, if it skipped, you may have bent valves.  If you're in there, you will need valve seals, and the first gen rings were not sooper awesome, especially if you rode it as intended.
wouldn't leak down basically show duff valve seals? maybe valves not sealing due to carbon build up, which would be cause by shitty valve seals...

Leak down shows if to much air is getting out of combustion chamber. [ bad rings, exhaust valves, intake valves.] stem seals have nothing to do with combustion.
Leak down is just pressurizing combustion chamber with air and seeing how much leaks out. about 15% max.
you'll be able to hear it coming out of the oil fill hole if it's rings or piston or out intake or exhaust.

Fwiw, I'm a former aircraft mechanic and have rebuilt bike motors before.

My choice would be drop the motor, spend $2k to buy one off eBay or from a scrapyard, and shoehorn it back in after doing a valve check and CCT upgrade.

Then flog the old one here or on eBay for $1000 with disclosure and let someone with time and skills fix it up.

You will have a running bike in a week, no worries about the quality of the work done on the rebuild, or if they missed something, be good for a valve check interval, and can recover some of your costs.

Again, check the valves for carbon...  known issue..  During the time you have owned it, have you often revved it up to 6-7K often ?   IMOP, probably no need for a new (used) motor. This is probably a pretty simple fix.

If it was mine I would put it back in time and do a leak down test before ever pulling the head.
THIS x 100.

I had issues with chain noise following a valve adjustment, then a no start, then compression test showed ZERO.  I assumed my timing had jumped and I had bent valves.  Opened it up and confirmed exhaust cam had jumped 2 teeth.  It was late, so I went to bed.

Next morning I tear into it, get the cylinder head off and the valves are perfect.  Even tho I'd thought of it the night before, I didn't re-check compression after re-setting the timing.  That would have given me "good" readings (the valves were fine), and I could have avoided all the extra time and money (head gasket, $100 worth of bolts) and been back on the road that much sooner.  Now the engine's out and I'm waiting on parts to put it back together.

I'd say if you're mechanically inclined - or at patient, willing to learn, and willing to deal with it - AND you have the service manual, you have nothing to lose.  I would gladly take it off your hands if you want to just be done with it.  :)

Points:
1.  it may not be as bad as you think.
2.  you can do it yourself if you're of a mind to.
3.  it's the cheapest option forward.

Of course, if you hate wrenching, want a new bike, or can get a ins payout, a new(er) bike would be a lot quicker and less hassle.

Easy check to see if valves are damaged is just check valve clearances. Any valve bent or held open by carbon deposits,  (hard to imagine), will have huge clearances in the check. If valve clearances good, valves can't possibly be bent.

The leak-down check is a LOT faster and easier.

Leak down test would be a lot faster except he will have to get into it to retime the cams so it would be just as easy to check clearances.
He will need a reliable cct first.

Alright.  I'm scared.  Starting to here tap, tap, tap on start up for a second or two on my 2012 Tenere.  Ordered a new CCT today from partzilla just in time for my 24k maintenance work.  I noticed the part number is the same 2012 thru 2016.  Anyone know if they have always been the same or Yamaha decided to use a "newer, better" one on the older bikes?
